Fairhaven - Day 15 -Sunday - Departing Tomorrow!
30 May 2010 | Bellingham Bay
Ray here...weather calm
Storm seems to be over although we have rain predicted for today and tomorrow...at least it's not those awful winds. Obviously, when you live on a boat, weather is one of your primary concerns. With that said, and the fact that tomorrow is the last day of the Memorial Day weekend, we should be heading out to Sucia Island in the San Juan's in the morning. After that, points north while we make our way up to Princess Louisa Inlet where it's supposed to be pretty nice.
All systems on the boat seem to be working well except we really haven't had a chance to test out our sails yet...hopefully, in the next few days, they'll get a workout. Thanks Dave for the advice about stern anchoring. We have a (relatively) small 25# Danforth on the back rail and 300' of combination rode. Should be okay...in a way I wish we had used it here as we really "sailed around" at anchor with winds and currents. On the other hand, we were testing out a new anchor swivel so I guess it worked out okay.
New topic and Important Note:
Sandy wanted me to remind everyone that starting tomorrow we are going to be out of phone contact for about a month. We will have our phone with our regular phone number, and it may work part way up into Canada, for emergency contacts, but we're fairly certain it won't work going up into Princess Louisa Inlet (duh...wilderness where they use moose antlers for antenna's!). Even if our phone does work, we're asking people to bear with us and not to try to contact us by phone as the rates are sky high for Verizon in Canada. Supposedly there is Internet along the way and I will be posting on the blogs and get email and stuff...but again...farther north into the Inlet we may lose even that. Regardless, it's important for people to not try and contact us by phone (except in an emergency of course) and just rely on Internet. We'll only be up there a month as we plan on coming back down to Fisherman's Cove in the San Juan's for the 4th of July. After that, it will be on over to Victoria for their 4th, (5th really) and finally Port Angeles or Neah Bay to wait for a weather window to head South....probably around the 10th-15th of July. On the good side...when we come down from Princess Louisa, we will be able to use the phone again as soon as we get into the American San Juan's. Hope this isn't too confusing. We will try to get a Canadian phone card or disposable phone in Canada but since everywhere we are going in Canada is Podunk, not much chance of that happening eh.
On the brighter side...nice to wake up this morning to still waters and sunshine! Feels like we've been at sea for weeks fighting the wind, waves, and currents...and yet... we never left our anchorage! Time now to prep and stock up which includes taking care of laundry, groceries, family and personal business (cruising life is hard that way). Bellingham and Farehaven are nice places to visit, but not to be anchored out...far too exposed for us lightweights.
Pictures are coming (sure Ray...).
