Back in the Northern Hemisphere!

Just a quick blog, because it's been a long time since we have been sailing in the northern hemisphere. We crossed the equator today en route to the island of Batam, Indonesia. It has been almost 3 years since we left the northern hemisphere (in the boat) and it felt great to cross back into it. I feel [...]

Person Of The Forest

The island of Bali was our introduction to the "other" side of Indonesia; the side with tourism, action, noise and [TRL: more] pollution. It was also the side of age-old culture. We rented a car and spent a few days driving around the island. We stopped in Ubud and watched the ceremonial Legong dance [...]

Incredible Indonesia!

We had a long sail up the coast of Australia to Thursday Island, where we finally cut the strings with Australia and jumped into another world. The winds were high and coming directly from astern but fortunately the seas were relatively calm due to the protection from the 2600 km long Great Barrier Reef, [...]

Stowaway

We have spent the last two months sailing about 2,500 miles from Cairns, Australia to Bali, Indonesia at a pace far faster than we are generally used to [Gary will blog a bit more about our travels up until now so stay tuned]. We are now happily parked at the Bali International Marina (which sounds [...]

Cairns…or Cans. Whatever.

Cairns (pronounced "cans") is certainly a great little city. It definitely is the launching point for the Great Barrier Reef and all the biggest, best and busiest reef tours anywhere on the coast. The city is built around tourists. They arrive to the marina early every morning (waking us up [...]

Nothing Nice to Say

We have been moving up the northern Australia (Queensland) Coast from Brisbane. We've had terrible weather with mostly rain and lots of wind. Our moms taught us if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. So, there you go.

Sitting In Paradise

Gary
We are still here in Cayo Alburquerque. It is around 30 square miles of shallow reefs and sand. It is hard to leave. This is one of the most beautiful spots I have ever seen. We went into the North Cay yesterday and visited with the Colombian Navy again. They took us for a great tour of their island. Showing us the beautiful paths throughout that are all lined conch shells. They have collected thousands over the years and done extensive landscaping with them. We took lots of pictures and tried to share conversation as much as our limited Spanish and their non-existent English would yield, but we always got it figured out. There are 13 men there, though saying men paints a certain image, they all seemed to be in their teens. They would not allow us to take their pictures or any of their bunkhouse, but it was great to see everything and grab a bunch of pictures. When I get on the internet again, I will post them. This remote blogging through the SSB radio does not allow attachments. It`s too slow. They are on the island for 3 months at a time then go back to Colombia. It is a hot spot for drug running and I think Colombia wants to maintain their presence in order to ward off Nicaraugua`s ever pressing sovereignty dispute over these islands and also San Andres and Providencia to the north. The Nicarauguans have always had a problem with Colombias ownership of the islands. They feel it should be theirs. The Commanding Officer would come and meet us at the beach landing, then walk with us around the island. He was always pretty serious, but could not help but smile when he told us he only had 21 days left (or when I tripped over a conch shell). It is beautiful, but there is only so much to do on the island. The Colombian Navy does not leave them with a boat even. They made their own gym though with make shift equipment they could salvage on the shores. It was a scene right out of Gilligan`s Island, I kept waiting to see a car made of coconuts rolling down a path, with two guys peddling. No luck. The Professor must be on another island.
