Back in the Northern Hemisphere!

Just a quick blog, because it's been a long time since we have been sailing in the northern hemisphere. We crossed the equator today en route to the island of Batam, Indonesia. It has been almost 3 years since we left the northern hemisphere (in the boat) and it felt great to cross back into it. I feel [...]

Person Of The Forest

The island of Bali was our introduction to the "other" side of Indonesia; the side with tourism, action, noise and [TRL: more] pollution. It was also the side of age-old culture. We rented a car and spent a few days driving around the island. We stopped in Ubud and watched the ceremonial Legong dance [...]

Incredible Indonesia!

We had a long sail up the coast of Australia to Thursday Island, where we finally cut the strings with Australia and jumped into another world. The winds were high and coming directly from astern but fortunately the seas were relatively calm due to the protection from the 2600 km long Great Barrier Reef, [...]

Stowaway

We have spent the last two months sailing about 2,500 miles from Cairns, Australia to Bali, Indonesia at a pace far faster than we are generally used to [Gary will blog a bit more about our travels up until now so stay tuned]. We are now happily parked at the Bali International Marina (which sounds [...]

Cairns…or Cans. Whatever.

Cairns (pronounced "cans") is certainly a great little city. It definitely is the launching point for the Great Barrier Reef and all the biggest, best and busiest reef tours anywhere on the coast. The city is built around tourists. They arrive to the marina early every morning (waking us up [...]

Nothing Nice to Say

We have been moving up the northern Australia (Queensland) Coast from Brisbane. We've had terrible weather with mostly rain and lots of wind. Our moms taught us if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. So, there you go.

On The Road With "The Green Bastard"

19 January 2011 | Wellington, New Zealand
Gary
It has been a while since I have blogged last. Sorry to those who follow and kept seeing no new blogs. We went home for December to visit friends and family and then have been camping all around the North Island since, so not much had been going on. When we arrived back to Pursuit in the end of December, we started doing some work on Pursuit, but the majority will be when we get back to the boat around the beginning of March. There isn't much work to do, just some improvements that we want done. Upgraded solar panels, radar, generator rebuild...again. The rings seized since I rebuilt the generator's head in Tahiti. It better work this time or it will become a very expensive anchor otherwise.

The new SUV is great and we have affectionately named it "The Green Bastard". Any of you Trailer Park Boys fans out there will know where that name came from.

We have started traveling south throughout the North Island and are now in the capital city of Wellington. They have nicknamed it "Windy Welly" for a reason. The wind whips through the strait between the North and South Island and it is generally windy here. The city is beautiful and we have spent a couple of fun days enjoying the architecture, cafes, restaurants and sampling the many bars in the city. Having been camping for the last three weeks, we were ready for a hotel break as well. It came at the right time too. Three typhoons have been building in the South Pacific and the weather as a result, that has been generated over New Zealand, made for a wet couple of days. We were happy to be in a hotel room and not in a tent during the last rainy couple of days.

Tomorrow we are taking the InterIslander ferry over to the South Island. We are really looking forward to the South Island, as we have been hearing over and over again about how beautiful it is. The North Island has been great though. Super scenery with lots of cows and sheep...lots and lots of sheep. There are 4 million New Zealanders and 40 million sheep. They are everywhere!

I don't have a lot to say, as we have just been road tripping around. There have been lots of interesting stops and people that we have met along the way. The culture, people and scenery feel very similar to Canada. New Zealand is an amazing place to visit.

I have posted a lot of new photos of the North Island. As we travel around I will try to post some blogs, but internet access is few and far between while we are camping. So stay tuned.
