Los Frailes to Mazatlan

28 November 2009 | Sea of Cortez
11/17/09, 1000 Crossing the Sea of Cortez to Mazatlan
Departed Los Frailes after a really great 5 days. After clearing the point we immediately had 15 knots of breeze on the beam and were doing 7.5 - 8.0 knots over ground speed. After outside about 5 miles wind sustained at 15-18 with swells of 6'-8' on the beam and making great time at 7.5 knots. Seas were a little steep for a while and pretty uncomfortable up until around 1500, then began to settle a bit. This was the beginning of a great passage. As dusk approached the wind had settled to 8 - 12 knots with a comfortable sea. (Occasional 8 footers, but really spread out. ) Nearing the middle of the sea after midnight was nothing less than incredible. It was a clear moonless night without any light pollution in any direction. The stars in some directions nearly touched the horizon, while we caught sight of frequent meteors, some brilliantly bright. What an awesome ride it was revealing just a glimpse of Gods handy-work. Makes you feel pretty small if you know what I mean.
Made port at Marina El Cid, Mazatlan at 1200, 11/18/09
