More skinny water and looking for alligators
14 April 2015 | McClellanville to Georgetown
Ros / Hot 80s and thunderstorms
It poured with rain most of the night and early this morning. We had to get out of McClellanville by 9am at the latest. We left at 8am and were still plowing through the mud at the entrance to Jeremy Creek. We called Suenos and told them to get moving lest they get stuck!
On a falling tide we made our way north crossing the South and North Santee Rivers. Dave was on alligator watch but we saw none. We did see some Dolphins, a Blue Heron and many elegant egrets and clumsy cormorants. We encountered only two known shoal areas that had the depth alarm squealing, at the at the junction of Minim Creek and just before the entrance to the Winyah River, coming out of the Estherville Minim Creek Canal. We had a boat to follow today also probably the one we saw anchored in Five Fathom Creek yesterday.
It's warm 80F and muggy today. The sun came out eventually and dark clouds chased us into Georgetown where we took a slip at Harborwalk Marina just before the heavens opened. This will be our fourth visit to the town we really enjoy stopping in this old town with a riverfront walk. Sadly they had a fire recently which took out a whole riverfront block. Across the river is a large paper mill, fortunately the wind is blowing away from it, it's rather stinky otherwise! Michelle Obama's family come from this area before her grandparents headed north. We were right to stop here as there are severe thunderstorms forecast for later this afternoon and you can feel it building.
