Dismal Swamp or Counjock.
21 April 2015 | Alligator River to Coinjock, NC
Ros/ beautiful sunny day but very windy.
The expected cold front came overnight with lots of wind and rain. We had a greasy spoon breakfast at the Alligator River Marina before we left. The forecast for today was 10 to 15 kn of wind and 1 to 2 feet of seas in the Albemarle Sound. We found in fact 15 to 25 kn of wind and 3 to 5 foot seas. To add to our enjoyment there were small half size crab buoys on short lines that were hidden most of the time in the waves so that you could not see them. A close watch was kept by the crew, but I think we went over a couple regardless, without harm.
The North Landing River is a cut that at times is dead straight and at times winds around a lot and eventually passes Coinjock Marina where we are to stay the night. The restaurant here is famous for prime rib so we went to dinner with our new boat buddies Pegasus, with whom we crossed the Sound today and who are also going back to their homeport in Solomons Island. We all took a long walk this afternoon in preparation for the feast!! We have enjoyed the company this evening and will journey on to Norfolk tomorrow. There are lots of bridges and a lock tomorrow so it will be an early start.
