Martinborough, New Zealand
05 July 2014
Karyn cold and sunny
Wow, we are in such a different environment for both of us. When we arrived in New Zealand, we thought it was beautiful. As we have returned, it has only become more so. Our first housesit was outside of Wellington and we loved it. We got a chance to become really familiar with the area. Since then, we have been in the US, Mexico and Australia. Now we are back to New Zealand again. We are in a small vineyard town north of Wellington called Martinborough. It is a vacation getaway for Kiwi's. There are small mom and pop shops, little restaurants and lots of wineries. We are on a 10 acre plot of olives called Akrotiri Estate. Olive oil is also produced here in this area. We were able to be here when they harvested our trees. Very interesting. The scenery is spectacular. The home is used as a B & B in warmer times of year. It is made in Italian style, very different from others in this area. When we came to meet the folks in January, flowers were blooming, etc. It is now the dead of winter. It is still spectacularly beautiful, however, there is snow on the mountains and we have frost every morning. We are doing farm-like chores, and caring for their Vizsla (Hungarian pointer). Indy is so much fun for us. He loves attention and craves outdoor exercise. He is happiest when we are working outside and he can chase varmints of all sizes and shapes.
Bob just had his birthday. We had a nice dinner at a local winery. We don't know anyone, so are a bit lonely. I have started to crochet again and am enjoying it immensely. I made us both hats and scarfs. We have really needed them. Bob is doing a computer programming class on the internet. Bob keeps the wood fire going in the front of the house. We turn on an electric pad on the mattress and a space heater an hour before we head to the back of the house to sleep. It really helps.
Realtime still has not sold. We are so disappointed. The broker says there is interest, just not contracts. We hope for one of the later. We are here until July 24th. Then we rent a car and drive on to Rotorua a few hours north of here. It is an interesting way to really become familiar with a country.
We find ourselves really missing our families and friends. This is stretching on quite a bit longer than we had planned for. We've plans to go back to visit at the end of October. We have been very fortunate for have house sits scheduled until February 1, 2015. I feel like an expert in the process now and commit quite a bit of time to the computer to make things happen.
We still love keeping in touch with our cruising friends and hearing their experiences. We have our feet in two different worlds.
