Bait Reef 2

From the surface the area looks like any ocean but underneath it’s a whole different world. The main attraction is ‘The Stepping Stones’, a series of 18 coral columns rising 10-15 metre from the sea bed with flat tops about 5 metres across just a metre below the surface at low tide. I used the surf ski to move around the area and dropped into the water whenever I reached a patch of coral. The visibility was excellent and the variety of coral and fish was breathtaking.
I also checked out the width of passage between the bommies and found it was a lot less scary than it first appeared, we probably had about 20 metres of clearance but I had to be able to recognise which bommies were deep enough not to be an issue and which ones had to be avoided. You wonder how Captain Cook managed to survive with no information at all.
