06 December 2010 | Ensenada de Los Muertos
I am typing this blog in the anchorage in Bahia de Los Muertos on the east coast of the Baja Peninsular. We arrived here yesterday afternoon and over the next week will be making our way south before crossing over to the West coast side of mainland Mexico on the week-end.
We enjoyed our time in and around La Paz and whilst there we had a surprise call from Matthew, he said that he would like to join us for a while which made us both very happy. Leanne got busy and made all the arrangements and he arrived last Monday at this stage thinks he will stay for a month or so.
While left the anchorage in La Paz and took a berth in the very upmarket Marina Costa Baja where we awaited Matt's arrival and for some windy weather to pass. Friends on the sailing vessel Perfect Wave were also in the marina and asked us if we wanted to split the cost of hiring a big car and doing a road trip to the pacific side of the coast on a surfing safari. The seven of us piled 7 surfboards of all shapes and sizes on the roof, we piled in and off we went. We had a great time and I have included in the photo gallery some pictures.
We left the marina last Thursday and headed for a group of islands off the coast - Isla Espiritu Santo/Isla Partida and Los Islotes where we spent 3 days exploring the anchorages and socialising with the crews of the 10 or so other boats there. One morning 16 of us all boarded S.V. Perfect Wave and headed to Los Islotes where we spent the morning snorkelling with the seal lions and discovered what we have nicknamed Australia Rock (picture above). This was really fun, the sea lion pups are playful and curious which makes for an exciting and special experience as they swim about you very close and nip at your flippers. The big bull sea loins are a bit intimidating though as they weigh about 800 pounds , are 8 feet long and like to swim straight at you with there teeth bared and then swerve away at the last moment. .... Another tick on the bucket list.
That's about it for now, stay safe and be happy
