Leaving the "friendly islands"
06 September 2012 | Neiafu Harbour - Vava`u Tonga
So its that time again. After a relaxing month here in Vava`u we are making ready to move on ,,, next stop Fiji .
Tonga is known as the Friendly Islands and we have found that to be an apt description.
When we arrived we were not so sure as the locals seemed to not be very engaging and we mistook this to mean that they were not that friendly. It wasn`t until I read in a cruising guide that the locals are very shy.
So we started again and went out of our way to say hello to everyone we came in contact with ,,, even if we just passed them in the street ,,, our hellos were always returned with a smile and a hello back . These are lovely people who and at least here in Vava`u seem to not yet be tainted by tourism.
We have really enjoyed the town , the islands and the communities as well as all the restaurants we have visited but best of all after having covered so many ocean miles over the last 6 months we have really loved the sheltered peacefulness of the many anchorages , the crystal clear water , the white sandy beaches , evening bonfires and dinner cooked over the hot coals, swimming , snorkeling and the traditional Tongan feasts.
The photo above was taken on one of those perfect days in the Blue Lagoon . a really special spot that a photo really doesn`t do justice.
We will begin our daily "on passage " blogs when we leave which at this stage will be Sunday or Monday.
Bye for now
