Saturday night we joined the crew for a bus ride up to Victoria, a town approximately one hour up island (north) where they have a food festival the last Saturday of each month. One long street is shut down and the local women prepare their specialties and sell them from food booths. We tried Fish cakes and bakes, fresh caught fish and chow mein noodles, homemade chocolate ice cream and Nutmeg tarts, but by far the best thing on the menu was Lambi Waters…or Conch Soup. Wonderfully flavorful – with a serious spice kick and loaded with conch and dumplings… we managed to get a dance or two in near the ear splitting bandstand, which someone thought was actually a Karoke tent…but NO – these were the entertainers! All I could really hear was the Base…boom, boom, boom…but that is typical of most music down here.
We wrapped up our final chores this weekend and so spent the afternoon hanging out with some new friends we met last Thursday. Just super people who we really enjoyed meeting. Then said farewell to most of the people we have met here, new friends and old. We are ready to fly home tomorrow morning (although I can’t believe where the last month has gone) and most everyone will be gone already when we return next month. And to add insult to injury, Hurricane Sandy may be making an appearance in CHICAGO?! So as soon as I’m done here I will check to see if our flights are still on…cause if not, we’ll just stay!
