Port McNeil to Port Alice

12 July 2018 | Port Alice
Warm but breezy
Restless Blog 12 July
7July- Jim Orvis arrived and Ben departed by Kenmore Air. 3 Kenmore Air planes arrived within 5 min
of each other ! We had dinner at the Steakhouse Inn with crew of Dreamgirl.
8 July- We departed Port McNeil around 1000 for the 40nm trip up to Bull Harbor where we arrived around 3 pm. We anchored and DREAMGIRL moored alongside us. The signs said welcome moorage and anchoring fees apply. We were not approached and did not have to pay a fee. Very quiet evening at anchor. We did not go ashore since signs said “Come ashore by invitation only” and we had not been invited. We later found out that a First Nation boat usually comes out to collect a fee of $15 to anchor and be invited ashore for an additional $5.
9 July- We got underway early (6:30am) to cross the bar and round Cape Scott. Conditions were excellent! We saw at least a dozen whales feeding as we approached Cape Scott. We decided to bypass Sea Otter Cove base on weather reports for next several days. We arrived in Winter Harbor around 2 pm and refueled. We then move to moorage at Outpost Marina. We decided to have dinner at the “restaurant “ (food truck). The lady prepared a nice codfish fish and ships for a mere $15. Moorage at Outpost was $1/ft. No power or water, though water is available at the fuel dock. The Gov’t dock costs $0.85/ft. Showers at the Outpost was $3/ 8 minutes. I’m sure it went more than 8 min! I finally turned it off!
10 July- we got underway to go fishing and then rendezvous at Pamphlet Cove (same place we anchored in 2005). DREAMGIRL had no luck fishing for Halibut, we caught a rockfish while trolling for Coho/Chinook. It was large enough to keep and we had it for dinner two days later.
11July- Anchored in Pamphlet Cove we spent a couple hours trying to unfurl Dreamgirl’s in mast furled with no joy. We decided to give up after consulting with Tori Parrot at Signature Yachts. We then decided to go ten miles further into Port Alice. Port Alice is a nice little community with a city dock (Rumble Beach Marina). Folks were very friendly. There is an excellent grocery store that is well stocked, a bank, and a BC Liquor store. There is a garbage receptacle at the head of the dock. The marina is somewhat protected with a log boom breakwater that is entered from the south.
12 July-We’ve decided to stay here another day then head back to Winter Harbor (27nm), refuel, take on water and go to Klaskish Basin on Saturday. We then plan to round Brooks peninsula on Sunday.

Weather Note: gales have been blowing off the coast since Wednesday. Several boats who arrived with us on Monday decided to leave Tuesday morning. We decided we would rather explore Quatsino Sound more rather than leaving right away. We thought we would rather be holed up here with gales than stuck in a Sound with no services for several days.

We have been amazed with cell phone coverage here in Quatsino Sound! It’s been excellent everywhere with the notable exception of Winter Harbor!
