Hvar and Points South

Lee and Kevin - good
Still heading south, Kevin and I anchored in the sheltered bay of Gradina on Korcula where we enjoyed good swimming in nice clear water. Pulled into Mali Lago on the north side of Lastovo where we found very good shelter in a reasonable depth, something of a rarity in Croatia. It was fun to walk around and look at the more ritzy holiday homes. As was not uncommon in these parts a fee was collected by the locals for the privilege of dropping anchor in their bay (in this case around USD30).
Further south we stopped at Polace on Mljet. The northern end of the Island is a National Park. While there were many boats in the harbor, it was also popular with backpackers and campers . From the harbor, the shore is distinguished by ruins of an old Roman Castle. A popular walk is around to the lakes - where one can visit a monastery in the Lake. The island monastery was a nice setting but I can't really rave about the walk! The harbor however was a delight to swim in and the town hosted several restaurants - where they cook ' under the bell' - basically a slow BBQ fire.
We turned around here, though we were within 30 miles of Dubrovnik, as we were scheduled to meet Sher and Scott and depart back to NC. We returned to some of the same places heading back north to Split but also some new ones such as Milna, a small town, much like Hvar on a smaller scale, but with a large sardine factory as an added attraction. Around from this town on Brac, we stopped at the little town of Bobovisce . This was a delightful little sheltered bay of nice holiday homes. We enjoyed several different nights anchored out here where we could enjoy our swims (aka bathing) and watching the locals enjoy the water - swimming is a big past time! One can also tie stern to at the town wharf where there is a little restaurant. Then back to ACI Split Marina (which was under major reconstruction!!) where we met the Gibbons and turned over Revilo into safe hands.
