Up the mast

had to go up the mast to try to trouble shoot the wind instrument. No luck so guess gotta go back up and retrieve it and take it back to Canada. The view was spectacular of course!

Where is home now?

When you are planning your "adventure" on the sea I think time almost gets forgotten. There are "deadlines" of course and you rush toward them knowing that the weather windows of fall will get fewer and shorter as time moves on. You are busy planning, provisioning, installing, repairing and finding crew [...]

Smile

I guess everyone has their own stories of the things that "touch them" as they are cruising. We spent four weeks in La Paz, really only intending to spend a week but somehow the weather, the things you have to get done at dock and just the ease of getting used to a place stretched the time out. The staff [...]

Lifting my spirits

This bird came along as we were heading to Los Meurtos. He landed on the bow and then left, came back with a couple of friends and they circled us for awhile. Then he, she or one of the friends landed on the bow and stayed for about 2 1/2 hours. It was a rough ride and yet it never left even with the million candlepower light on it as I tried to see what was ahead in the dark. I went forward and was within a foot of it. Still it remained until I was actually dropping the anchor in the dark. It was a very moving thing for me, like a spirit helping me. It had been a very long and tiring day. I doubt I will forget how this eased anchoring in the dark in a strange place.

I was in Whistler only once and I really did not like it. The only thing I saw and resonated with was a sign that said "Do something every day that frightens you". I might just have that covered for awhile, or not. There is nothing like counting on AIS and radar in the black of night to tell you who is out there and when and where you will pass. How can I both understand the comment that "I would not do the trip from Victoria to Ensenada again for anything under a million bucks" and then again maybe I would do it in a heartbeat? Maybe because your feelings are as fluid as the water under the keel. I should, can and do feel proud that at three in the morning after no sleep in well over 24 hours I was dressed and ready for dropping that reefed main, despite 25 knots of winds and waves that are pounding and merciless. But I would lie if I said I wasn't relieved when we decided we didn't need to. I am thankful that among my fears is not going forward in almost any conditions as there were things that were broken or way off what they should be and I could and did comfortably go forward to help fix them. If this sounds like bragging it is only a little, it is more a sharing to those who are yet to do this that you need all you have in you to do this. Maybe you will have nice winds to push you where you want to go but if your trip is likes ours, more likely the winds will not be what you want or need and the waves and challenges will be more than you expected. Either way, it will be "yours" and make sure you enjoy that.
