SV Riparian - Sailing out of Colorado

In 1776, Statia was a Dutch freeport that was a huge sea port. Hundreds of ships came here to trade. Much of the gunpowder, weapons and supplies for the American Revolution came through Statia. In 1776, a United States ship, the Andrew Doria, entered the harbor and fired a salute, the salute was returned, thus becoming the first salute give to the United States. In Fort Oranje, there are many plaques describing this historic event.
We took a taxi tour of Statia today, visiting the Fort, a battery overlooking St. Kitts, the old governor’s house, airport, and protected beach where turtles nest. Our guide, Bobby, was very good and provided both historical and current views of life on Statia. Bobby is a Statian native who has lived here most of his life. He said he can remember when there were only two cars on the island and there was no electricity. About 8 years ago, Statia reverted to direct Dutch control. Since then the medical care and schools have seen vast improvement, including complete update of the hospital, medical helicopters, and air conditioning in all school rooms. Technically we are now in Holland!
