Fort Oranje and First Salute to America

In 1776, Statia was a Dutch freeport that was a huge sea port. Hundreds of ships came here to trade. Much of the gunpowder, weapons and supplies for the American Revolution came through Statia. In 1776, a United States ship, the Andrew Doria, entered the harbor and fired a salute, the salute was [...]

The Qwill

Easter Monday is a holiday on Statia and most businesses are closed, a good day to take a walk up the Quill. The Quill is the larger volcano on Statia. It is dormant, with its last eruption around 400 AD. It gets its name from English misspelling of the Dutch "Kwil" which means pit which is a great [...]

Arrival at St. Eustatius

After a beautiful sail from St. Barts we arrived in St. Eustatius about 4 PM. As it is Easter, the harbormaster and customs folks have the day off, so we raised the "Q" flag and will spend the night on the boat to check in tomorrow. The guide book said there were several public mooring available, [...]

Arrived at St. Kitts! (and greeting from the SKNDF)

Lynn
We took a slow motoring trip from Statia to St. Kitts. The wind and waves were not favorable for sailing, and we needed to run the engine to recharge our batteries and to run the watermaker to refill the water tank. Installing the watermaker last year has made this trip much more pleasant. We no longer need to worry about where we will dock to get water or to carry water in jugs. Although we still do not use a lot of water on board, freedom from worrying about water makes the trip so much easier.

We were very lucky to get a slip at Port Zante Marina in Basseterre, St Kitts. It is a great place as it is close to town and it will be easy to meet our friend, Mark, when he arrives tomorrow at the airport. We were able to come into the marina at about 6:00 pm, just in time for sundown. Just after I took this photo, a boat from the St. Kitts and Nevis Defense Force, Coast Guard Division came into the marina and parked next to us. A few minutes latter, three large Coast Guard officers came over and asked permission to come aboard. We welcomed them aboard. JoAnn showed them all the our safety equipment, I showed all our official documents, we answered a bunch of questions, and about 45 minutes later they said good night and left to inspect another boat in the marina. I think it was mostly a training opportunity, fortunately I had taken the dinghy into Customs and Immigration earlier that day to clear in while we were waiting on the Marina Slip. It was our first time to be boarded by any Coast Guard, but the officers were very polite and businesslike.

We look forward to exploring Basseterre tomorrow and meeting Mark on Friday.
