What makes a great anchorage?

A good anchorage provides protection from the prevailing winds and a place to leave your boat so you can go ashore and explore the local countryside. What makes a great anchorage are the people you meet and the experiences you have while you are there. In the tiny bay of Marathos there are a few Taverns/Inns and they have combined their efforts to provide moorings for visiting yachts. With large anchored concrete blocks and heavy lines, you can feel comfortable in most winds. We arrived in the bay with a few other boats already here. We took a mooring and had some lunch. As we returned from a short dingy trip to the main harbor on Arki, we came by another moored sailboat called "Thetsis". Vasilis was aboard and had single handed the boat down from Samos, his home port. We talked about where we were from and where we were going and then Vasilis told us about the Tavern/Inn on the north side of the bay. "Pantelis", a family owned and operated business, has been around for many years and has a great reputation for fine Greek food, fresh baked breads, and great wine. There is no ferry service to this island but people come here in their own boats (or Pantelis fetches them from Arki with his launch). It's also a lovely place to stay for a few days to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We agreed to meet Vasilis there for dinner that night. We shared some nice wine, a wonderful salad and grilled red snapper along with many funny stories about our sailing experiences. "Pantelis" has definitely set the standard by which we will measure all Greek restaurants we visit this season. We are very glad we stopped at Marathos and if you're ever traveling around the Greek islands you should definitely do the same!
