Any way the wind blows...
01 June 2007 | Korthion bay on the island of Andros, Greece
Robin
We left this morning from Siros with a forecast of NW winds 15-18 knots. We decided that Batsi on the island of Andros would be a good stop for the night. We arrived in the bay of Batsi and anchored off the beach. We had a nice lunch and then the winds began to turn to the SW, leaving us wide open to swells from the Mediterranean. We rushed downstairs and looked at the Navtex for a new weather forecast. Now it said SouthWest 3-4! Arrrggghhh! With nothing on this side of Andros offering protection from a Southwesterly wind, we pulled up anchor and went to the other side of the island (23 miles away). Now we're sitting in the bay of Korthion (also on Andros) where we have found a rather large mooring ball that is not in use. It looks way to big to be a private mooring so we think it is a safe harbor mooring for small ferries when the Meltemi winds get too bad or it belongs to a large fishing boat. Cross your fingers that whoever owns it doesn't come home tonight...
