Pensacola

27 April 2012 | Big Lagoon
Lester
We have been anchored in Big Lagoon for several days now. The water here is so clear. After two months of cruising, the clear water in a nice reward. When we were dropping the anchor, I told Robyn, "I can see our anchor chain laying on the bottom!"

We have seen more dolphins here than anywhere else we have been. Numerous times a day, a pod swims by Seanna and gives us a show. The neat thing has been the baby dolphin. The sand here is so white that the dunes look like snow drifts when the sun is overhead.

There isn't any public transportation available to us here, so we have only our dinghy to get around on. Consequently, we haven't gotten to tour Pensacola like we would like to. We did dinghy over to the ruin of Fort McRee. The fort was built during the Civil War to keep those pesky Yankees out of Pensacola Bay. Then, during WW II, the fort was used again to defend Pensacola Pass. Bunkers, and gun mounts were built, but the guns were never mounted.

The highlight of being in Pensacola for us was the Blue Angels. Pensacola is their home base, and every Wednesday that they are here, they put on a practice show. Seanna is anchored very near to the end of their runway, so the show on Wednesday was right over Seanna. Our "oohs" and "awes" reminded me of watching a fireworks show.

Today, we prepared for an early departure to Destin. We were leaving Big Lagoon, and Robyn handed off the helm to me. i ran us aground almost immediately! We hoisted the sails, hoping they would heal us over enough to get us underway again. It didn't work, so we called TowboatUS to pull us off. TowboatUS did a great job, but we lost our sailing window. We needed an early start to make it to destin in daylight. So, now we will try it again in the morning. i knew better than to go to a new destination on Friday. Robyn thinks that is just superstitious. I wonder what she think now!
