Tropical Sailing and Baja Parties

14 November 2019 | Man ‘O War Cove in Bahia Magdalena
Pete
After a brilliant all day run with the genoa and drifter deployed,
we reduced sail to slow down and arrive at Bahia Santa Maria in the
daylight.Linda and I got to see a Frigate Bird hovering over the mast on
our night watch, with a full moon and clear skies"magical. We arrived
early in the morning in Bahia Santa Maria to a bay filled with
sailboats"we finally caught up with the Baja Ha Ha fleet"anchored in
about 30’ of water.Mid-day Tuesday we took a Panga (about a 20’ open
fishing skiff with a large outboard operated by the local fishermen)
through the surf zone into the small fishing village. The Baja sailor
crowd (about 200 folks) set up a luncheon (provided by the local fishing
families) and had a going live band that was brought in"crazy party in a
beautiful remote spot!We hopped on another Panga boat for the exciting
return run through the surf to Rover, anchored in the bay.The driver
applied a well timed burst of speed to clear the surf zone during a
short lull.

Wednesday morning we headed out for a half day run under power (not much
wind) to Man ‘O War Cove in Bahia Magdalena. In the early evening, we
joined a large gathering of dinghies off of the Baja Ha Ha “Grand Pooh
Bah” mother ship (a very large catamaran) for a wild music and dance
party off of the back deck/aboard dinghies"it was quite something to behold!

Thursday morning we got weather reports that a tropical depression may
hit Cabo San Lucas this weekend, so we made the decision to stay in Man
‘O War Cove for several days until the weather situation becomes
clearer. This will be a good location to be, if the forecast weather
holds"Eric will provide more details in another post.Today we motored
the dinghy into the village and had lunch at a small Cantina"great fish
tacos and beer.We got to talk with a number of the folks off of the 20
or so Baja Fleet boats that have chosen to remain in the bay along with
us, the “Baja He Haw” subfleet!
