Hanging out on Rover

04 August 2023
Eric
Today was a pretty slow day on Rover. Weather was projected to be windy
and rainy, so we planned a day aboard hunkered down. The morning started
out with a nice rainbow over the harbor, which requires both sun and
rain. The sun continued through the morning, while the wind didn’t quite
meet the forecast. We could have gone ashore between showers, but after
doing errands yesterday, we didn’t really need to get off the boat.

Katy stayed busy by making a celery quiche, which we’ll consume for
dinner and some chocolate/peanut butter bars which smell great. Lunch
was watermelon and celery. We’ve eaten almost halfway through the giant
(6 pound) bunch of celery we got a couple of days ago. It’s a great
vehicle for peanut butter, which I stocked up on in French Polynesia,
because I thought it would be scarce. Turns out Australians eat peanut
butter, so as we head west it gets more common.

The meat here in the markets seems pretty sketchy, so we have a mostly
vegetarian diet. Linda provisioned originally with lots of Textured
Vegetable Protein because it’s shelf stable and packs well and we’re
working our way through it. I'm only a temporary vegetarian. When we eat
in restaurants ashore, I always choose meat or fish.

We did a few small boat projects during the day: polishing the port
lights and repairing the spare main halyard which was damaged at Rarotonga.

I also collected the arrival and departure dates for current and future
crew. The original crew of 4 all made it to on time to come aboard Rover
in San Diego and 3 of them (not me) departed from Rover on time. Since
the original crew left, we’ve had 11 crew join us on Rover: of those 11,
4 crew have had flights to meet the boat delayed or cancelled and one of
them had to wait an extra day for lost luggage to catch up. Two crew
delayed their arrival due to illness and two will leave the boat for
various personal reasons (not related to the voyage). We were late to
Vavau and on time to all the other crew departure locations, so two of
the 14 leaving from Rover have needed to reschedule (delay) their return
trip, while two had to pull up their departure for personal reasons.
