Baltimore

Weather forecasts showed that a crossing of the Celtic Sea was possible 2 days later, so we made our way to the well-known departure point of Baltimore, rounding the famous and spectacular Mizen Head, at the south-west tip of Ireland. We also passed the Fastnet Lighthouse, a few miles south of the coast. The Fastnet Lighthouse is the rounding mark for the Cowes to Southampton yacht race. We opted for a scenic route to Baltimore via an inner passage through coastal islands. The Baltimore harbour is very large and beautiful. We decided to find a mooring on the western side off Sherkin Island. We went alongside an old pontoon and when we were settled in we realised that there was no access to land because of storm damage a few days earlier. We moved to a mooring ball by which time it was very late so we went to the Sherkin Island pub and enjoyed scampi and chips for dinner.
