Robin/partly cloudy with showers
Jim is at a slip in Sunset Marina, Ocean City, MD. Tuesday he ran into strong SW winds and seas- seas around 8ft, winds blowing 20-30mph. Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, Jim was accompanied by silver-sided Dolphins. Dolphins have bad breath, smelling like fish, and they came up right next to the cockpit, squealed and blew. When winds subsided Wednesday, Jim realized that he had been blown into the northern edge of the Gulfstream, and had a 15-20 degree northerly set in his course. He then motored almost a 24 hour period. Thursday morning Jim started to sail into a southwesterly and by sunset he was about 120 miles from Norfolk, VA. Spent the night tacking against a 20-25 knot wind blowing SW out of Norfolk. After fighting winds, currents and seas all night, Jim found himself 75 miles from Norfolk and at that point of 7am he made the decision to head for Ocean City, which was 22 miles away at the time. Gale winds were forecast for Saturday night and he wanted to make safe harbor vs fighting the weather. Jim was low on fuel, after having 40 gallons on hand. Buzzards Bay had been hours of motoring vs the sailing that had been hoped for.
Happy hour was fun, with $1.00 drinks and $4.00 crab balls. The Bartender gave Jim a chocolate covered strawberry. Robin missed the first flight to Norfolk on Friday morning, and caught the next one only 30 minutes later. It was good to hear a very brief message from Jim upon her landing in Norfolk, however, Jim was not there. He informed her that he was indeed 140 miles away. A Dollar car was rented and Robin drove the 3 hour drive north to meet Jim in Ocean City, MD. The Harborside Restaurant for a dinner of fish and chips, and a Orange Crush ended the long day for both.
