Apologies for the delay in updating. The boatyard demanded all our time and then after launch we were having too much fun to fool around with computers. Now we are back in California getting ready to go back to work so the excuses ran out.
We launched at PSS on November 23, about 3 weeks longer than we hoped but not too bad considering. After laminating 90 meters of takien-tong, 76 gussets, 18 plywood panels, one layer of fiberglass, 3 layers of epoxy, 2 coats of epoxy paint, and 3 coats of bottom paint the deed is done. The new bottom works very well, no more pounding so far and the leaks are all gone as well. The boat still tacks easily but does not yaw so much to gusts at anchor. All in all worth the pain. We also managed to rewire the mast so we now have a VHF and working anchor and deck lights. We added several structural bulkheads and removed the now redundant floor joists in the hulls, built in 4 bunks, added new oak beams in the cabin with LED lighting, reshaped and reglassed the rudders, redesigned the forward crossbeam chainplates, put in new stanchion supports all around, faired and painted the forward cockpit and wired the hulls for electricity.
After launch we spent several days trying to get the boatyard off the boat, then went for a test sail around Langkawi and were very happy with the way the boat handled. We got it up to 10 knots on a close reach at one point but quickly reefed to keep things more sedate.
A week after launch Annette's parents, Gordon and Grete, came for a visit. It was really special to have them with us in Thailand for the next 3 weeks. In addition, we took full advantage of their baggage allowance. Among other things, they brought the Lavac toilet. Despite carefull packing the airlines managed to destroy the porcelein bowl utterly. In one of those bizarre cases of dumb luck we managed to locate the only bowl in asia just minutes later down the road from the marina.
We made our way to Phuket slowly, taking our time and enjoying some of the islands along the way. Once there we picked up Annette's daughter Sabine and her boyfriend Josh and headed up into Phang-nga bay for another week of meandering around the haystacks. Grete learned to snorkle and was quite a water junkie while Gordon distiguished himself by baking Christmas shtolen and bread in the just-installed oven. Sabine and Josh left us for greener pastures in Rai Ley with plans to travel the region for the next 5 weeks. They were last heard of somewhere north of Chiang Mai. We can only hope they are in one of the better prisons at this point.
We buttoned up the boat and left it in Yacht Haven Marina in Phuket, then flew home for another 4 month work stint.
