“We’ve been eating the elephant one bite at a time”, as our friend Daryl from Australia would say. It is with great satisfaction that we are steadily marking things off our “to do” list as done! This trips list was again pages and pages long, but as we complete the items on the list, we are looking less like the Beverly Hillbillys and more like sailors. We’re so proud of ourselves we even put up our American flag. Since the completion of the dingy which we last reported on, we’ve put together a sailing rig out of bamboo and a blue/red tarp which makes it a toy as well as functional. We’ve also installed a new radar & depth finder. Another big addition is Mike’s official “no girls allowed” workshop, which occupies one third of the starboard hull, complete with a workbench and shelves to put all his tools and building materials on. And the piece d’resistance is the bamboo “teak and holly” look alike floor covering that we installed in the main cabin, which transforms the boat from a boat under construction to an elegant “live aboard”. I won’t bore you by rambling on the litany of checked items, but, even though we add to the list daily, we check off more things than we add.
Since our last blog we moved from Phuket, Thailand to Langkawi Malaysia….. again, making it our third round trip with little new to share, except we discovered the Butang Island Group. It is the last little island group before you cross the border into Malaysia and sits about 30 miles off the mainland. I’ll let the pictures in the gallery speak for themselves, but I do want to add that, although this is the off season, we were blessed with perfect weather, so it was like being in paradise all by ourselves (we needn’t center the photo’s to eliminate the tour boats and concession stands).
It is the eve our great escape out of “Chicken Harbor” . Tomorrow we set sail, providing the weather is favorable and begin our journey home. The first leg of our trip is a 60 mile passage to Penang, an island off the mainland of Malaysia. This island is known for its rich “East meets West” culture as it is the oldest of the British Straits settlements and the watery road of trading commerce between Asia, Europe and the Middle East. This should be a short stop for us to provision up, check out the city and some of its history and then move on down the Straights of Melacca to Singapore. Our goal and final destination before heading back to Santa Barbara is the town of Miri in the Malaysian state of Sarawak on Borneo, just south of Brunei. We will keep you posted as to our actual progress.
