We had a glorious day today! It started on my watch at about 3:30 am when it became light and I rolled out half of the jib. Rum Doxy responded by jumping up to 7 knots and headed in the northeasterly direction of our destination. Soon it was a full jib and 9 knots as she virtually flew over the smooth water of the dawn. At 6am the captain took over and I went to my soggy bunk for a long nap as the boat continued to roar onward. When I got up the sun was shining and it was warming up enough so we all pulled out our musty bedding, towels, clothes and whatnot to hang on the lifelines even as we opened all hatches to air out the boat. I checked the engine room and found my offensive sweat pants were still damp so I brought them out for a day in the sun with high hopes. I was rewarded as, by the end of the day, the sweats were nearly odor free and almost totally dry. In the excitement of the sun shining I decided to reward myself with a fresh pair of underwear and a shave. I then proceeded to use the leftover chili and make us chili omelets for breakfast and did that ever hit the spot. The captain and I enjoyed that while the first mate had a salad. At some point on the early afternoon as the wind was dying we thought it would be a good idea to fly the spinnaker. The wind died to nothing, so we packed the spinnaker away and fired up an engine. It was a beautiful day, I even applied sunscreen, and I was sitting on top of the cabin roof when I briefly spotted a shark. Probably a white tip but who knows. We now have two species of albatross accompanying the boat. The new ones have a white body and white underwings. I also saw some lovely boobies and some smaller birds. We find it interesting that we never see any of these birds diving on fish, they just seem to spend all their time gliding around for our entertainment. It is early in my watch now, 9pm, and the stars are out in a completely clear sky. It is a huge wow! Cruising along at 5.5knots, listening to Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, staring at stars â" voyaging.
