Exploring Ecuador

After our arrival in Ecuador, we had originally planned to meet Sabine and Alan in the Galapagos for a boat tour, but, after a rather long and strenuous 8 day passage from Costa Rica to Ecuador, Mike and I realized that the last thing we wanted to do was spend a ton of money on another cruise seeing the same boobies, frigate birds and sea lions that we've been battling for months now. So we ended up meeting Sabine and Allan in Cuenca.
Booking online at the last minute we found a fancy, high class, vintage colonial hotel in the heart of the city for 1/3 of the normal price. Staying at the colonial hotel really added to the ambiance of the city. The four of us walked the entire old town, strolling among the many native Ecuadorian men and women in their traditional hats, skirts, colorful scarves and ponchos. We wandered through many beautiful parks and elaborate cathedrals. We toured the town on a double-decker bus in the rain then ended the day at a micro brew pub, The Golden Prague. The next day we got an early start and went up to Cajas National Park. It was like stepping into middle earth. We spent hours hiking a trail through dark forests of stunted, gnarled trees, opening into swamps and meadows of sodden moss, sprinkled with tiny bursts of brightly colored flowers. We meandered at 13,000 feet in the Andes mountains surrounded by jagged rocky peaks bursting out of golden tufted meadows, dotted with steely mountain lakes and trickling streams. The shifting, gray, cloud-covered sky only added to the drama. It must have been the altitude because we all felt like we were tripping on acid, expecting trolls and orcs to pop out from rocky outcrops.
After Cuenca, S and A flew to the Galapagos and Mike and I headed north to the small town of Otavalo, known for it's Saturday craft market and the beautiful surrounding volcanoes. Again we lucked out on hotels. The first was a rustic mountain cabin perched up on the mountainside a few miles outside of town, looking down on green pastures studded with farms and gardens. I was in heaven with a fireplace and a stunning view from our cozy little room. I didn't want to leave. The second hotel was on a hillside overlooking the town of Otavalo itself with Spanish architecture and large balconies. In both cases, our hosts were native Ecuadorian families who were so warm and kind I felt like I was staying in their home. It was sad to leave. In the 2 days spent in Otavalo we did some more hiking in the mountains, relaxed in our mountain lodge and shopped till we dropped.
Now it's back on the boat for a few last minute clean up and some voyage prep before flying home for Christmas.
We wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Peace, Love, and Joy!
