St Martin
03 April 2010
A beautiful place to be.
4-4 We sailed the entire way and even had a passenger with us overnight. A bird of some kind landed on the back of our boat and stayed till dawn. I will look up what it was someday. We arrived in St Martin mid morning, anchored the boat and headed for customs. Marigot is the main port on the french side and a picturesque town. We walked around a bit, had lunch and found a fresh produce market. Prices are much better here than in the V.I. as we had expected.
4-5 Easter Sunday and not much is open. We explored Simpson's Bay Lagoon by dingy, a great protected anchorage. We hiked up to the old fort and took a few pictures then took a bus to Orient Beach. No pictures as you are not allowed to have a camera on the clothing optional beach., or as I called it 'The Penis Gallery'
Their are 4 other boats here that we know and we chatted with them on the VHF radio. I am now attempting to make Easter Dinner.
4-6 We love this island. It is interesting and beautiful. Yesterday we went grocery shopping and were shocked at the high prices. About halfway through the store we realized that we were seeing the Dutch price. The Euro on the French side is about the same as the dollar but on the Dutch side our cost is about half of what was posted. We always stock up on the basics when we can find a decent store.
Today we are sitting at a sidewalk cafe watching the tourists from the cruise ship and doing our taxes. Just a little bit of reality in our dream life.
4-10 We have been attempting to leave for St Barths but it was been very windy. 20 to 25 knots all day and night, we are anchored in Simpsons Bay Lagoon so we are fairly well protected. We took the bus to Phillipsburg the other day and really enjoyed the day. It is a nice cruise port and a beautiful boardwalk area. This is a large cruising community here in the Lagoon and they have get togethers and events on a regular basis. I can see why people spend months here but we are anxious to move on. We have so much to see yet!
