4-14 We have been cruising 6 months today. We are in Antigua and what a trip getting here - 9 foot seas and 15 to 20 knots of wind. The seas were crashing over the bow and it was an exhausting trip. I guess we should have waited a day or so more in St Barts!
We arrived for the Classic Boat Regatta that starts tomorrow. Then next week is Race week with all the high tech sailboats. We will hang out here for 10 days or more.
4-19 The Classic Regatta has been beautiful to watch and I just uploaded several pictures of the boats. The first day we climbed to the top of the hill overlooking the bay and the rest we went out on a friends big cat to be closer to the race.
Falmouth Harbor is the center of the activity for the Classic Boat Regatta, we are near the main channel and can watch much of the activity from our cockpit. Boats in the harbor are flying flags from many counties and the boats range from 24' all wooden sloops the big 124' J Boats, to 'Athena' a 296 foot tri masted schooner. The oldest boat in the race is a 67' Nygren M Yawl built in 1899. The sight of these classic boats under sail is a sight to behold. The oceans racers are arriving for next weeks events in English Harbor next door, a picturesque setting that was once Admiral Nelson's headquarters. The historic buildings are still being used today.
4-27 Race week has started and just about every type of boat is participating. The classes include cruising boats, bareboats (chartered) and performance boats- the largest is 'DSK Pioneer Investments', a 90' Swan. Antigua Sailing Week is one of the top five regattas in the world and the biggest in the Caribbean. Every night there is a large celebration with great food and music.
We are currently in Jolly Harbor, the end of yesterdays race and the start of today's. This is a beautiful harbor with walking distance to marine stores, banks, supermarkets, restaurants and bars. There are houses built on canals with boats and it reminds me a bit of Florida. Our friend Morgan on Winergie is here and through him we have met many wonderful cruisers.
5-1 We are back in Five Islands Harbor just up from Jolly Harbor. This is one of our favorite anchorages. The last few days have been work days - We have cleaned the boat top to bottom inside and out. (even the bilge). I have re-oiled all the exterior teak, some of it twice. We hauled the dingy up on the beach and scrubed it top to bottom as well. We inventoried our canned goods and updated our spreadsheet. WOW, we got so much done.
5-8 We spent several days back in Jolly Harbor and have decided that this is one of the most convenient harbors ion the Caribbean. People are friendly and helpful. If you need something not available here there are buses that run to St Johns every 20 minutes. We will be back!
We are leaving for Guadaloupe and The Saints today. One last trip to the market and top off fuel and water. Then, we'll say goodbye to our friends here to discover new places and friends we haven't met yet!
