5-10 Today we passed Guadeloupe and we arrived in The Saintes. We arrived early morning after crossing from Antigua. We had great winds and sailed along at an average of 5.5 knots until we came along side Guadeloupe, the island is so mountainous that it blocks the wind. Terre De Haut in The Saintes is off the SW tip of Guadaloupe (we decided to save Guadaloupe for the trip back north in the fall). This harbor is absolutely darling.
After resting and getting settled in, we went to shore for a stroll. Upon returning to our boat we found another boat tying up along side, and the owner had actually boarded ours to tie off. He evidently tried to anchor too close to us and got his anchor caught on ours. In his effort to get his anchor undone he wrapped a line in his propeller. The man was an angry Frenchman who hates Americans and blamed his stupidity on us. He was adamant that we had too much chain out and that was the whole problem. We had a 5:1 scope and he stated 2:1 was plenty! OMG! Other boats around us who saw the whole thing said he was a stupid idiot. After he got untangled from us he went and did the exact same thing to another boat. He then yelled at them for also being greedy American who always want everything. They pointed out their flag and that they were Canadians.
5-11 Every morning fresh Croissants and Baguettes are delivered to the boats in the harbor at a nominal cost. Yummy! Yesterday we walked to the top of the high hill to tour the old Fort Napoleon. It was a bit of a hike but well worth it. The views were outstanding.
5-12 We checked out and will leave tomorrow for Dominica. We hate to leave here as we both know that this is our very favorite island! I know we have said that before but this is truly perfect. This is an area we will spend much more time in on the return trip.
We have so many more islands between here and Grenada and hurricane season starts soon so we need to keep moving south.
