Another Stop at St Lucia

Many Boats Moving North
11-25 Wow, what a ride! Rough seas and big winds gave us a less than pleasant journey north. One big wave came over the boat and drenched everything inside and out. After, while cleaning up, I found a fish lying on the counter top! Yuk, what a mess.
Part of St Lucia was hit by Hurricane Tomas, some buildings and homes washed away. Here in at Sufriere, by the lovely Pitons, 14 deaths were reported. This very deep harbor is part of a large marine park with mooring balls available for overnight stays. The wind funnels down through the high peaks and around the bay, causing very windy conditions. One night is enough, we need a nice quiet harbor for a few days.
11-28 Sailacious is anchored off the beach at Rodney Bay, one of the prettiest beaches we have seen. This rates high on our list a favorite anchorages in populated areas (our true favorites are secluded areas). Good grocery stores with dingy docks and a large marina has fuel and water inside the harbor. Along the shoreline there are several nice resorts and today we have a Club Med Sailing Cruise Ship and a Star Clipper square rig ship anchored at the mouth of the bay. We will spend a few days here waiting for a weather window for pleasant sailing conditions to head North to Martinique.
12-1 A bus tour of St Lucia was a day long event! We hopped a bus with friends from Shadowfax and took it to the end of it's route. We repeated this process until we ended back at Rodney Bay, about 8 hours of site seeing. This is a much more economical way to tour islands and we do it often. Organized tours can cost over $50 U.S. per person and we spent a total $15 each and that included lunch! There was much evidence of Hurricane Tomas, several places the road was washed out and signs of landslides were frequent.
A note here on Shadowfax: Keith built this ferro-cement sailboat in his yard over a period of 14 years. He even made his own casts for the fittings on the deck. He built his own hydraulic windlass and wind generator. It is a most impressive feat! We hope to meet up with Kieth and Heather again on our travels.
