After 3 days back on the boat we finally have most of the mildew subdued, the majority of our purchases put away and found a place to sit when we eat! Steve put the new CDI unit on the outboard and got 'WeGo' our dingy/car running. It is amazing how tubing (and everything else) deteriorates in this heat and just today we got running water again. The Perkins was acting like a child that didn't get enough attention and refrigeration is still being difficult but we have our Engle freezer that we can use as a small refigerator untill the other is up and going. Tomorrow we take the interior cushions in to have them covered in the new fabric we purchased in Trinidad last fall.
All three sails need minor repairs after the beating we took heading to Grenada to catch our flight to the US. The main halyard is tangled up somewhere in the top of the mast and many lines need to be replaced. Normally we just stay put if the weather is not going to produce a calm crossing but sometimes the clock rules.
10-9 All systems are working and the boat is back in order. Well almost, our interior cushions are being recovered and these should be back in a few days. We borrowed a friends Sail Right Sewing Machine and spent most of today at the dock re-stitching the UV covers on our sails (the colored part on the edge of the jibs). The thread only lasts a couple of years in the strong sun. Tomorrow we are going to make a new cover for the forward hatch so we can leave it open even in the rain.
This is a fairly large community of cruisers waiting out hurricane season. Soon boats will be departing in all directions but until then there are activities going on all week long. Spanish lessons are twice a week, Dominoes twice as well. Pot lucks, volley ball and even cricket are weekly options. Sometimes French Cooking Classes are offered and even painting with watercolors!
10-14 Exciting is not always a good thing.
Yesterday was exciting. In the morning we went and picked up our newly covered interior cushions and they look great! In the afternoon we were in the local marina playing Mexican Train Dominoes when a squall came up. It was blowing pretty good when the security guard called out the name of a boat dragging anchor. Less than a minute later 'Sailacious' was called out as well. Thankfully a neighbor was on his boat and saw ours take off! Mooring lines completely frayed and with no anchor to slow her down she hit one boat before he got to her and then just bumped a second boat as he climbed on and secured the two together. We arrived then at the same time as another helper and we got our baby back to safety. We still are not sure exactly what happened but thank goodness we were back in Grenada and not still in the US when this happened.
10-24 Sails are back on and Sailacious is ready to go! Go? Where? Well we are not really sure! We had planned to sail west and spend a year cruising Central America but now think we may spend one more season in the Islands first. There are a few placed we missed and some harbors we want to revisit. All I know for sure is that within a week we will be sailing....somewhere!
