We really enjoyed our month volunteering at Lake James but Nomads need to move on. Great Smokey Mountain NP was a day trip from Lake Powhatan campground just south of Asheville. Jumping back on the Blue Ridge Mnt Parkway landed us at the entrance to the park. The mountains really did look Smoky as the early morning sun heated the landscape.
We visited Mingus Mill, one of the oldest working mills in the country, walked up to Clingmans Dome, and toured the nature trail.
With over 30 species of salamanders it's not surprising that is called the salamander capital, more than anywhere else in the world! And did you know that there is no fee to enter this park ever and for anyone?
The lovely day of sightseeing and short walks put an exclamation point to our stay in North Carolina.
Hurricane Hermine had closed down Congaree NP for a few days and fortunately reopened the morning we arrived. Much of the boardwalk was still underwater but we were able to enjoy most of the 2.4 miles through the old growth bottomland.
We had made reservations at a nearby state park but that closure put us at a Walmart for the night before heading to the coast.
We took our time enjoying the historic cities of Charleston, Savannah and St Augustine. Dear cruising friends joined us in Savannah and the puppies fell in love.
Lunch at Mrs Wilkes Historic Dining Room might be the highlight of the visit. We had seen an episode on one of the food networks raving about the fried chicken but didn't even mention all the wonderful other dishes that were served. It was worth waiting in line for.
The Castillo de San Marcos NM is the oldest masonry fortress in the United States. Situated in historic downtown St Augustine, we made it part of our walking tour.
Anastasia State Park was wonderful and came with an added bonus this year. Now that Steve is 65 we get half of camping at all Florida state parks. Great perk added to the half off we already get at national campgrounds.
So this closed or third season of RVing. We have visited 33 National Parks and traveled through 42 states, what a beautiful country we have.
