Oh when the Saints, come sailing in...
21 December 2009
We are now in Iles des Saintes. We arrived after a pleasant twenty mile sail from Dominica. However, in terms of culture, it is like we crossed the Atlantic. The Saintes are a small group of French Islands, picturesque with red roofed houses in the hillside. The town has cute shops, bakeries and restaurants. Tourists come on ferry boats from nearby Guadaloupe and rent scooters (essentially no cars here) that they tend to drive like maniacs. We are anchored outside of town near a small piton and rolling hills. The water has amazing 75 foot visibility. There is excellent snorkeling/diving from the boat. We have learned that a fabulous feature of an anchorage is to have a beach that the boys can swim to - by themselves :) When this happens, the quiet on the boat is...blissful. Next we are off to St. John to meet Chris and Kris for Christmas! They are arriving from Santa Barbara to stay at Maho Bay eco camps. We are hoping to anchor in the same bay and hang out with them. The general lack of holiday hoopla surrounding us has been refreshing. We do have the spirit though - on the boat the boys created paper snowflakes and decorated with a few ornaments. Santa should hopefully find us. The internet access is intermittent, so we'll update when we can. We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday with family and friends - we miss you!
