In Route to Gibraltar
17 July 2010 | The boat
Rodney
We just left Cadiz in route for Gibraltar with Nani and Noelani as our excellent crew. Gibraltar is 65 miles away and we need to traverse the famous Straight of Gibraltar late this afternoon.
We spent one night in Vilamoura and two nights in Cadiz on our way to Gibraltar. Vilamoura is in Portugal and Cadiz is in Spain. Vilamoura is a major tourist spot with a nice marina that is surrounded by restaurants and bars. Many Europeans vacation here because of the long white beaches and warm weather.
Cadiz is a much different city. It is surrounded by a great sea wall with cannons to protect the city. Cadiz has a rich maritime history as Spain's closest port to America and could be Europe's oldest city. The town is traditional and beautiful with small crisscrossing streets lined with four story buildings. One of the special features of the city is hundreds of towers all over the city. These were used in times of old to spot approaching ships - both friendly and enemy. We took a very nice tour to the top of the largest tower. It is amazing how different a city looks from above. On the western side of the city is a very nice neighborhood called Alameda - go figure.
