Astipalaia
22 June 2011
Astipalia is on the route less travelled in the Dodecanese island chain of Greece. The Knox Whites proved extremely seaworthy in our two days of passages to arrive. Although it was calm to start, we did eventually get acquainted with the meltemi winds, with over 30 knots - behind us thank goodness! One of the reasons we're here is b/c the island has a number of anchorages protected from the northern winds which are expected to continue for the week.
The island has been inhabited since ancient times and the main town and castle are built up on top of the hill for protection from pirates. Exploring the ruined 15th century castle was like a medieval playground for the boys. They also love the locally made icecream - mandarin and banana are the favorites. Tomorrow we get to have a party for Leo's 11th birthday - he's not quite ancient, but getting there!
