We just crossed the half way point to Hawaii so we are getting closer to paradise. Today we made just over 170 miles and are looking forward to making landfall. We just passed California Girl and Back Water so we are trying to pick our lanes as we make our final gybe into Kaneohe. We have been spending quite a bit is time looking at the weather and calculating the shortest trip to Oahu. The shortest distance is the great circle route. In some years the shortest trip will be along the shortest distance, but with sailboat races this is usually not the case. Sailboats need wind so we need to balance the most wind vs the shortest distance. We run computer models to predict the shortest trip every twelve hours so we can update our calculations. Our current analysis indicates that if you sail directly to Oahu you will be sail into an area with no wind and sit there for 12 hours. We have spent too many hours sitting instead of sailing so we are sailing an arc that goes west off Oahiu around this area. There is so much strategy in this sport - lets see if it works.
