Communication day

06 February 2017

So a somewhat frustrating couple of days in some ways. Yesterday it was too windy to go out to the front reef, so we spent the day doing manatee surveys and manatee habitat surveys. It is really lovely being out in the sun in the mangroves, despite the lack of manatees. The survey's are conducted in conjunction with the Belize fisheries department, and the conclusion from this one is that manatees are not active in the lagoons between 9 and 12! Other times yes, but not during our allocated time slot. Manatee habitat surveys require you to throw out a plastic quadrant and estimate the coverage of plant and algae growth, plus the species that are growing there. So not only have we had to learn fish species, but also seaweed and plants too. Today was my turn to do the San Pedro run, along with most of the others, as we have all had to renew our visas. Very tedious wait to do this, but a lovely day in San Pedro (if you really have to leave the dive camp!). Very pretty little town, quite touristy, but no inclination to go shopping. Lots of internet catching up, emails and calls to family, followed by a delicious lobster lunch. Food at camp is delicious, but it has to be said that it is all a bit of a variation on a theme. However, having it all prepared for you, including having it washed up is a real luxury. Party night tonight, but feeling exhausted and not really in the mood for it, but hopefully a couple of beers will sort that out.
