Thanksgiving 2009
The remnants of the American cruiser contingent left in Vuda and Musket Cove decided to treat ourselves to a back home Thanksgiving dinner complete with turkey and pumpkin pie. Arrangements were made with Wayne, Robinson Crusoe Island, for dinner for ten Yankees and a few of his hotel guests.
The resort provided the food and we helped with preparation. Well, the other women aren't used to a man in the kitchen, so naturally, to keep order, I drank beer on the veranda with the other guys. Sometimes you have to sacrifice to keep the universe in ballance.
Four of us (Argonaut & Bold Spirit) were staying in Bures and the rest were anchored off the resort. Our meals were included and the others paid the regular yachtie rate. Ten bucks. Not a bad deal until you try to find turkeys in Fiji. Pumpkin is readily available and Wayne managed to find three turkeys. "No big deal" you say. Then you find out that Wayne's partner owns South Pacific Meats and these were the only three he could find and the price was a hundred bucks each! Well, $100 Fiji. That's still $52 US X three. Thanks Wayne.
As we (A&B) were renting a car and continue on to Suva for the weekend, the resort boat picked us up at the landing on the river near Natadolo. Same as our last visit with Argonaut, We were treated to the usual hospitality which includes great food and a dance show plus the Bure which he upgraded from basic to deluxe (for a backpacker accomodation). The rooms are still basic, but we're used to it from our Mexico adventures. Some folks need plush digs but we're happy just keeping the rain and skeeters out.
Dinner was a big hit. It was a quiet night with thirteen yachties, three South Americans, and a few Kiwis. None of the Kiwis had ever eaten pumpkin pie and I had to twist arms to make 'em try it. I noticed there was none left on anyone's plate when dinner was finished. Another successful mission in paradise. Sorry, I was too busy eating to take a pic of the finished product!
