This fun rally event is really “land-based” cruiser activities and not a regatta at all. It was scheduled to start on March 28, one day after we arrived; however, due to high swells closing the harbor entrance for a week, there quite a few boats arriving late.
Nonetheless, we enjoyed the swimming pool, got laundry done and hooked up our little window air conditioner to escape the oppressive heat. It is speculated that El Nino is creating more heat and humidity than normal. Even local residents complain when the temperature is 97 and the humidity is the same!
Rally events were highlighted by a two-day van trip to the small village of Suchitoto where we were treated to a deluxe room overlooking the lake below and our own private swimming pool. The hotel owners were gracious hosts. We enjoyed a wine reception the first evening and a gourmet dinner in the courtyard with music and poetry by an accomplished local musician. Understanding Spanish poetry is difficult.
En route to Suchitoto, we also visited a local village of Ilobasco where ceramics are made.
