Enjoying South Africa
We have now spent over 6 weeks here in Cape Town and one might wonder what we have done all this time.
First of all, our priority was to be at the factory watching the final stages of Frisky being built, seeing all the plumbing and the electrical fittings. Ther were many decisions and we were happy that we were welcome in the factory to see the dedicated team of workers every day making progress. Rudi, the builder, arranged visits for us with sailmakers (North Sails) and mast rigging makes (Sparcraft) and engine installers (Yanmar) etc etc. We have been VERY BUSY!
But on weekend we have taken trips out of town to enjoy the beautiful countryside and wine tasting. This area reminds us so much of Napa Valley in Northern California, except that the wine here is substantially more reasonably priced. We plan to stock up on some of our favorites for the Atlantic crossing.
One weekend we drove more than 6 hours to Mossel Bayj where we explored the beautiful coast and inland mountains. Inland from Mossel Bay is an area known as Karoo which "specializes" in ostrich farms. Of course we visited one to see these interesting birds close up. (See photo)
About 10 years ago we enjoyed a luxury safari in which we stayed at the best safari camps and saw amazing wildlife, so we haven't felt the need to repeat that top notch experience. Driving throughout South Africa this time has been very enjoyable, and our Garmin GPS has been invaluable navigating the roads in the countryside and detailed streets here in Cape Town.
