Because July is winter here, the Royal Cape Yacht Club hosted quite a gala event called Christmas in July. Rudi, our boat builder, reserved a table for 10 for all of us Maverick owners. Everyone was encouraged to wear Christmas “attire” and the Club was decked out in full Christmas lights and decorations.
Before the dinner event, we invited all the other Maverick owners to our newly launched boat for cocktails and munchies. It was great fun to hear from other owners how they have been using and enjoying their boat. Many of them appreciated Dave’s new layout for the forward-facing nav station. One of the couples is receiving the next boat being built, so they did lots of measuring and thought about things they wanted on their boat. That’s what we had done back in March when the boat before ours was launched It is nice to have the options to make some custom changes based on one’s preferences.
The Christmas gala dinner itself was quite a lavish affair. Prizes were given for best costumes and for best table with everyone having best costumes. Dave and I didn’t have much in the way of Christmas dress here with us on the boat but we found a funny red ski hat with fake snow on it for Dave to wear. He sure missed his famous Christmas suspenders! Linda simply had a red turtleneck. There were raffle tickets and Dave’s number was pulled from the hat. He won a nice medium size cooler which will be appreciated when we ever get to warmer places. The temperature here in Cape Town certainly felt like December in Ventura with cold nights around 55-60 and daytime temps around 60-65.
There was fake Santa who gave out small “his” or “hers” gifts to everyone too.
The dinner was delicious and quite gourmet. We have found the meals at the Yacht Club to be very tasty and amazingly reasonable. The US Dollar goes a long way here so most of our dinners for 2 including a nice bottle of wine are about $20-25. All in all celebrating Christmas in July was a highlight of our July here in Cape Town .
