We had a quick downwind passage from Luderitz Namibia up to Walvis Bay, arriving after 2 days on September 7. Entering the large bay was a bit daunting with the thick fog. The harbor was much larger and more commercial than we had imagined...and very busy. The port captain helped us on the radio with instructions on going to the moorings at the Walvis Bay Yacht Club.
When we approached one of the empty mooring buoys, Frisky slidded to a slow stop, having run aground. Since our boat only draws 4 feet, you can see how shallow it was in that area. Dave was able to back up and we found another mooring buoy in deeper water.
Walvis Bay has lots of ocean life with dolphins and seals abundant. The day tour boats even make it a habit of feeding the seals. Consequently the animals are quite friendly and here is a photo of one of them who climbed up into our cockpit one afternoon!
