While at the Marina Samana in the Dominican Republic, we rented a car and drove the 3 hours down to the capitol of Santo Domingo. We were lucky to find an excellent tour guide in the Old Town to walk around to see the sites. Columbus established a settlement here very early and the first street in the New World, the first hospital and first church were built here. We visited the modern Columbus monument with exhibits from countries established after Columbus’ voyages to the New World.
The drive from the marina down to Santo Domingo was mostly on a high speed toll road, passing through a national forest and many, many acres of farmland. We were impressed by the fertile agricultural fields.
After a lovely 5 day stay at Samana, Dominican Republic, we set out again for the next leg of our voyage: 2 night passage to the southern most island of Great Inagua in the Bahamas.
