After a safe and quick sail for two nights, we arrived at Matthew Town Great Inagua and anchored near the small town harbor and took our dinghy into the harbor to find Customs and Immigration and check into the country of the Bahamas. Several men were sitting in the shade nearby and when we asked if they knew where the offices were, one of them said: “I am the Immigration Officer and I can drive you to the Office.” Great! We piled into his Jeep and he drove the ¼ mile to the Immigration Office whereupon he checked all our documents, stamped our passports and directed us to the Customs Office next door. More paperwork and stamping and a cruising permit fee of $350 made us “official”. This fee included a fishing license. We asked the Customs Official if there was an ATM in the town so we could get some Bahamas dollars and he said he was going that way – so once again a free ride back into town. The ATM didn’t work and it was Sunday so we waited until Monday to come back on our own and try again. All in all, one of the friendliest and easiest (AND definitely one of the most expensive) check-ins so far!
