Finally on Saturday, May 5, there was a predicted break in the weather, so we left the squeaks and groans of the marina and set out for an overnight sail to Lucaya on the island of Freeport.
When we arrived, we learned that the marina in Lucaya didn’t have space because another boat had decided to stay longer. So we anchored in a small cove and did some dinghy exploring. After checking the weather forecast one more time, we decided that leaving for an overnight to Florida right away would put us ahead of predicted north winds in the Gulf stream off the Florida coast.
After anchoring only 4 hours, we set out for our second overnight sail for Florida. We made a good decision because cruisers who arrived just one day later had to battle north winds kicking up nasty waves on the Gulf Stream which flows northward.
