Newport RI and Narragansett Bay
20 June 2018 | Narragansett Bay
One of our favorite states is now Rhode Island. People are friendly. "Everyone" is a boater. Newport is a fantastic mixture of classic yachts (which are seen sailing all over the Bay) and ultra-modern megayachts.
Thanks to excellent suggestions from our cruising friends, David and Toni, we found many wonderful anchorages, small towns and islands for our 2 weeks in Narragansett Bay.
Bristol RI holds the oldest July 4th celebration and the town's roads have the center lines painted red/white/blue. Bristol also has the America's Cup Museum and the Herreshoff Museum, which we enjoyed visiting.
The day after we arrived at Newport, the Newport to Bermuda offshore race started, and we enjoyed watching the start of over 150 sail boats from a cliff overlooking the harbor entrance.
Thrivent friends, Tim and Jeanette Schmidt, joined us for several fun filled days of sailing and enjoying the delights of Rhode Island. We toured some of the amazing Newport Mansions built by the early Industrialists like Cornelius Vanderbilt.
