We had a wonderful few days exploring the old town of Cadiz. Some highlights:
Narrow cobblestone streets lined by 4-5 story architecturally beautiful limestone buildings from the 1700-1800s, shady and cool even in the heat of Iberian day;
fantastic fish market in a square in Mercado Central. That's one big tuna!;
Cathedral de Cadiz, started in 1722 and not completed until 1838;
sidewalk cafes on almost every corner... but is it a "sidewalk cafe" if it takes up the whole street? Open air markets in many of the plazas;
flamenco dancer with castanets in the square by the cathedral - an amazing artiste and artform;
Roman amphitheater with seats for 20,000, highlighted in Cicero's writings;
delicious tapas in Mina square;
seaside Castle of San Sebastián contructed to guard this important port, built in 1706 on the site of the Greek Temple of Kronos (Phonecians founded the city in 1100 BC);
beautiful beaches lining the Atlantic coast;
and maybe a little wardrobe replenishment was in order, though Sam says they are still perfectly fine.
After a few touristic days, we headed out under the stars for the 100 mile sail back to Vilamoura, Portugal. A very dark 4am start, followed by nice sailing with 12-16 knot winds on a close-hauled course. Made it to Vilamoura as the sun was going down, happy to berth and put our heads on our pillows.
