Sunshine SkyBridge

I have to tell you about the Sunshine SkyBridge ! The Skybridge is a major feature of Tampa Bay, spanning from Bradenton to St. Petersburg fully across Tampa Bay. At 430 ft tall, it is not only impressive, its downright scary going over it. On extremely windy days, the DOT shuts it down for fear vehicles could loose control and go off the bridge into the bay below. The center span opens wide enough to permit cruise ships and container ships to pass below as they enter St. Petersburg and Tampa ports.
In 1980, the original Skybridge collapsed when the freighter MV Summit Venture collided with a pier plunging cars and a Greyhound bus into the bay. Thirty-five people were killed. In 1982 construction of the new, greatly improved, current Skybridge began and it was dedicated 1987. In addition, the bridge has a most colorful history. More than 200 people have committed suicide by jumping off the bridge, now they claim that nearly 50 suicide attempts a year are made from its summit. So many that they have installed six crisis hotline phones along the center span for those seeking assistance braving second thoughts. There was even a group of bungee jumpers determined to make a spectacular event, arriving by limousine to the summit, connecting their bungees and jumping, only to have their bungee cords break and fall to the bay below with numerous broken bones !
NPR did a piece on the 35th anniversary of the bridge disaster, it's worth listening;
