Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve
02 March 2018 | Levy trail walk through mangoves
Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve is near Governor's Harbour. With more than 25 acres, the Levy Preserve is a treasure. Owned and operated by the Bahamas National Trust, it is an arboretum of native plants indigenous to the islands of the Bahamas. It houses a wide variety of wildlife, birds and plants illustrating their functions (edible), invasive (imports) and dangers (poisonous), It's miles of trails are well maintained and educational placards provide a wealth of information.
One of the more intriguing bits of information is why much of the Bahaman soil is red, overlaid on the karst limestone. The display explains how wind storms from the Sahara Desert are carried across the Atlantic with prevailing winds and end up deposited in the Bahamas. The amazing result is some mangrove areas washed from the shore with "blood red" water as you can see in the photo above. Check out the Gallery for other photos from the Levy.
